In this novel, Mia was just more of a wench to her mother. Even if she's mostly nice, she'll usually revert to making some irritatingly judgmental comment about nerdy men (or women). It's beginning to really get on my nerves that every single female protagonist in a young adult novel is a snarky selfish twit. My number one complaint here was that one of the teenagers, Mia, was an annoying brat.
The first half of the book focuses on the three kids at Earth as they debate whether or not to enter the lottery and eventually win their spots on the moon. I have different pieces of criticism for different parts of the book, because the beginning, the middle, and the end of this novel are all very different from each other.
It's been a while since I've written a book review (I really ought to read more!) but I'll do my best to keep my thoughts ordered. It held my interest from beginning to end, it freaked me out big time (the reason I'm writing this review this early in the morning is because I woke up at 5:30 too scared to sleep and had to finish the rest of it!), it had characters that I felt some fondness for, if not fell in love with. I was expecting Antoine, the second protagonist, to have a stalker-esque type of ex who wouldn't leave him alone, but he was actually just a regular heart-broken teenager. Secondly, it had second protagonist who wanted to get as far away from his ex-girlfriend as possible, which I thought was hilarious. The blurb was also slightly misleading, focusing more on the characterization of the three teenagers than the frightening stuff, so I actually assumed this would be a fun, "character-driven" novel.Īnyways, I purchased 172 Hours last Saturday (or really I begged my father to buy it for me because I'm a poor college student) for two reasons: It had a Japanese protagonist who wanted to go to the moon to escape her "restrained" Japanese lifestyle, and I'm an anime fan so this intrigued me. There were some creepy parts here and there, but the over-all tone of the novel was friendly enough that I didn't think it would be scary all the way through.
I was actually not aware that this is more of a horror novel until I was about halfway through it. 172 Hours on the Moon is a young adult science fiction/horror novel about three teenage kids who win a lottery trip to the moon.
